You will find Medellin ATM's (called ATH's locally) in every mall, grocery store, bank, casino, blockbuster video and many stand alone kiosks all over the city. Always try to use one in a well lit secure area, only take out what you will need for the day and only carry 1 ATM card at a time.
Cirrus, Plus, Maestro and Master Card networks are honored at most locations.
You are much better off getting money from a Medellin ATM than changing money at a Medellin cambio. Cambios will charge anywhere from 3-12% against the median exchange rate posted for the day, whereas most banks will use the maximum exchange rate posted at the time of withdrawl.
Most Medellin ATM's will limit you to 300, 400 or 500,000 pesos per withdrawl but you can make multiple withdrawls up to your daily withdrawl limit with your bank. Citibank ATM's will allow 800,000 pesos per withdrawl up to your daily maximum.
Your money will be dispensed in multiple denominations of 50K, 20K and sometimes 10K notes. Always count your money and keep your receipt in case there is a problem.
Do not flash your cash if there are numerous people standing close by to your money machine location. Stuff it in your pocket and count it later in private. Again, try to use an ATM that is in a secure location like a bank, mall, casino, grocery store or other well lit areas where there are generally security personnel close by you.
Lastly, you should probably notify your bank that you are traveling to Colombia and get them to pre-authorize your ATM withdrawls or you may find yourself with a seurity hold on your card.
